Tsunami Report From Southern California

As the vast majority of my readers are au courant in terms of world affairs, I'm sure you've all heard about the massive earthquake that struck Japan - and the subsequent tsunami warnings throughout the Pacific Ocean's coastal communities.

Well, I'm in one of these communities, and the only thing that's happened is severe overreaction. The police set up a blockade for a kilometer around the harbor from all directions, preventing me from getting to two restaurants I work out of. This makes little sense, though, because Coast Highway is actually closer to the ocean in some parts than the harbor's shopping area.

The only abnormality here is that there are literally hundreds of boats out on the ocean. Even on a hot summer day there have never been so many boats out on the water around here.

Apart from that, there's nothing out of the ordinary here vis-à-vis the tsunami. My thoughts (not prayers) are with the Japanese as they struggle through this horrific disaster.

  1. Despite the overreaction, I hope it doesn't get any worse for you.

  2. I heard one looky loo in CA was swept away by a minor wave. He and two friends went to the coast to take pics of the waves. The two friends made it back to shore, but he didn't...

  7. @S.S. - It already got here, but wasn't noticeable. There were loads of people out watching; one got sucked away in northern California.

@Candlej- I think the boats were out in case all the water was sucked back out to sea, potentially damaging boats in the process. I'm not positive, though. I got really close to the water (roughly 5 feet; 1.5 metres away), and it looked a bit weird. Can't really put my finger on it, but the water just looked different today.

  12. I heard that there's been a lot of overreaction about the tsunamis. But I'm still feeling for the Japanese, because it did get them pretty bad.

  15. I can understand the concern California had, especially Hawaii since we should never underestimate tsunamis. I find it better safe than sorry, and a good way to practice perparation and proper reaction to disasters.
